CFP Exam - Certified Financial Planner Designation

The CFP (Certified Financial Planner) Exam is a professional, multi-day exam given by the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards, Inc.

The exam is 2 days, 10 hours. All multiple choice format with three sections. Subject areas include tax planning, employee benefits and retirement planning, financial planning process, estate planning, and investment management and insurance.

Qualifications to sit for the exam include completing a CFP educational program such as undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. Studies could be completed via online or classroom instructions.

Also, certain professional designations such as the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualifies one to sit for the CFP.

Experience-wise, CFPs must have three years work experience in the financial planning process prior to obtaining the designation.

CFPs must adhere to strict code of ethics.

CFPs must have 30 hours of CPE every two years to retain their certification.

Application for the CFP Exam must be done 7 weeks prior to exam date. Application can be done online or by calling 800-487-1497.



Financial Analyst Salary

Financial Analyst salaries vary according to firm size, firm location (region), and individual skills & experience. In general, Financial Analyst salaries are as follows:

Entry level (usually from 0-1 year experience) averages $23-31,000. The smaller salary applies to the smaller-sized firm. Therefore, the larger figure applies to the larger-sized firm.

A Financial Analyst with some financial analyst experience has a salary ranging from $33-47,000.



Financial Controller Qualifications

All financial controller positions are required to have at least a Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance, educationally-wise. Many firms require an advanced degree.

All Financial Controllers are required to have accounting and/or finance work experience requiring at least 3 years. Many Financial Controller positions require 10 years work experience. Prior experience may include work as a Financial Analyst.

Most Financial Controller positions require a CPA or other professional designation.

All Financial Controllers must have good communication skills - oral and written. They must possess strong supervisory skill; have good analysis skills; and be detailed oriented. They must all keep current with regulations as they affect the company.



Financial Services Careers

Financial services describes the industry interested in dealing with management of money. It provides a variety of money and investment areas. Companies to look towards during your finance job search include banks, credit card companies, investment firms, stock brokerage firms, and insurance companies - to name a few. In earnings terms, financial services manages the largest assets in the world.


Treasury Job Education

Most treasury accounting job descriptions require at least a Bachelor's Degree. Many require an advanced degree due to the increased responsibilities of this position. Some companies require the degree to be in finance or accounting and some companies have no preference. Usually, the more technical the treasury position you apply for, the more it will require a finance or accounting major.

Senior level Treasury positions are filled by individuals with numerous years of experience in the field, strong supervisory skills, the ability to communicate well, and have strong cash management and banking relationship abilities. Keeping abreast with industry changes is essential for success, also.

Many firms also require an MBA in either finance or accounting. This holds especially true for advanced level positions such as Treasury Analysts at Fortune 100 firms.

Many firms and governmental entities also require professional certification obtained through additional studying and examination. Once again, the higher level the position is, the more this applies. Treasury Directors usually need either a CPA or CFP designation.
